Where is the diagnostic communication port located on a Yamaha PWC?

Yamaha WaveRunners do not have a dedicated diagnostic port. The Scanner Tool 102 connects through the dark gray 3-pin cluster/gauge connector located in the front storage compartment.

Unlike some other brands, Yamaha WaveRunners route diagnostic communication through the 3-pin cluster/gauge connector rather than a standalone diagnostic port. On most models this connector is dark gray and sits in the front storage compartment; some models require opening an access panel to reach it.

To start a diagnostic session with Scanner Tool 102: connect the tool to a PC via USB and launch the software (select Yamaha if using multi-brand software). Unplug the 3-pin cluster connector and connect the Scanner Tool 102 Yamaha adapter cable's light gray connector to the mating connector on the WaveRunner harness. Wake the ECU by starting the ski, or by attempting to start it if the engine won't run, before reading or clearing fault codes.

If the front storage area has been modified or an access panel blocks the connector, consult a service manual for the specific model year to confirm the exact routing.

What is the standard bore size on SBT cylinders and pistons?

Standard bore sizes vary by engine model — for example, the Kawasaki 1100 is 80mm, the Kawasaki 900 is 73mm, the Kawasaki 650 is 76mm, the Yamaha XL800 is 80mm, and the Polaris SLX 780 is 71.3mm. Always measure the existing bore in millimeters before ordering pistons or a cylinder kit.

SBT cylinders and pistons are sized in metric. The right starting point is to measure the actual bore diameter with a bore gauge — if it matches standard, order standard pistons; if it has been bored over (typically in 0.5mm increments), order the corresponding oversize kit.

Known standard bore sizes from SBT's technical records:
- Kawasaki 650: 76mm (1mm-over kit available)
- Kawasaki 900 (ZXi/STX/STS): 73mm (0.5mm-over kit available)
- Kawasaki 1100: 80mm

Does SBT sleeve cylinders during the remanufacturing process?

Yes. SBT remanufactures cylinders with new sleeves already installed, bored, and honed to finished size. SBT is a remanufacturing operation, not a machine shop, so sleeving is not offered as a standalone service on customer-supplied parts.

When SBT sells remanufactured cylinders or cylinder exchange kits, the sleeves are installed as part of the remanufacturing process — the cylinders ship already sleeved, bored, and honed to finished size and are ready to assemble. No additional machine work is needed on the customer's end.

If a core is returned with scored or damaged sleeve walls, that alone is generally not a reason to reject it, because SBT resleeves the aluminum casting during remanufacturing. What matters is the condition of the aluminum casting itself — cracks or holes in the aluminum casting can make a core unusable.

SBT does sell individual cylinder sleeves as separate parts for customers who intend to have machine work done elsewhere, but SBT does not perform sleeve installation or other machine-shop services on customer-owned cylinders or cores.

What are the compression specifications for a Yamaha 1200 engine?

For a Yamaha 1200 non-PV (power valve) engine, SBT's compression specification after break-in is 115 to 135 psi. Compression may read lower before the rings fully seat to the cylinders during the break-in period.

SBT does not hot-run two-stroke engines before shipment, so compression can only be confirmed after the engine is installed and the rings seat during break-in. If an initial reading comes in below the 115–135 psi range, putting more hours on the engine is the recommended first step before drawing any conclusions.

All three cylinders should read within a similar range of each other. A significant difference between cylinders is a more meaningful concern than a single low reading taken before break-in is complete.
